This post is primarily for women. If you feel like your pain is significantly worse during your cycle, you’re not imagining it. Personally, I’m out of commission during that week. I’ve often asked the men in my life how other women manage when “Aunt Flow” comes to visit. As someone with PCOS, I’ve never experienced regular cycles. Being on weight loss medication has helped me have more consistent visits. However, it can be difficult to cope during that time.
My partner often brings me chocolate and energy drinks, as they help me emotionally during that week. Here’s a piece of advice: learn what your partner likes to do during their cycle. Personally, I prefer to be left alone to play video games and read books. However, I’ve known women who prefer companionship and attention during this time. Everyone has different needs during their cycles and flare-ups.
Speaking of flare-ups, I find that taking a hot bath helps. How do you deal with your flare-ups?
Something else I’ve been fighting with is getting out to take the dog for a walk. We got home late yesterday, and my body said, “You’re taking a nap instead of taking a walk.” Does anyone else find their bodies arguing against exercise even though it’s supposed to help? I was feeling down. I felt bad about it. Then I talked to my pain management doctor. They’re happy that I’m managing to do anything. So I’m passing that advice on: as long as you’re trying and doing something, be happy and proud of yourself. Fibro, depression, and PTSD, to name a few, are not easy to live with.
